Sullivan to Mr. A. H. Belmont dated November 13 and 17, 1959, enclosing letters to the Department on the same dates relative to a request for "erotica" from the confidential files of this Bureau for use by the captioned Institute. The Director notéd the following: "In so far as any material which FBI has it is not going to be made available to this outfit. H," on the memorandum of November 13, 1959. Memorandum of November 17, 1959, included [information that Dr. Wardek meroy of the captioned Institute would be in Washington, D. C., for several days and id to further discuss the request for "erotica. " On November 20, 1959, Dr-Pomeroy came to this Bureau and indicated " that persons considering this matter may be interested in knowing that he had con- tacted the Post Office Department for "erotica. " According to Dr. Pomeroy, an adviser to Postmaster General Arthur E. Summerfield had stated that he would recom- mend that confiscated "erotica" be made available to the captioned Institute by the Post Office Department. Dr. Pomeroy advised that there had been no final decision relative to this matter. Dr. Pomeroy also stated that the Institute had been successful in obtaining "erotica" from several courts of local jurisdiction. He commented that no information was being obtained from Federal courts. _— _ In connection with the final form of this research project, Dr. Pomeroy was of the opinion that there would be sufficient material for a book or a part of a book. This was not definite as the final product was "several years away." It may be of collateral interest to note that during the course of the con- versation Dr. Pomeroy volunteered that he had experienced very good relations with the Bureau -in the past and hoped that this would continue. However, he thought he should say that the position of the Institute had not changed. Thé Institute could not divulge to this Bureau;for investigative purposes the sources of its "erotica" as it would cut the Institute fromi its sources of supply for research. Dr. Paul Gebhard, director of the Institute,-téok this stand with Bureau representatives on July 11, 1957.
