PAUL GEBHARD, INDIANA UNIVERSIT bv LADIES' HOME JOURNAL Oo MAY, 1965 —_ Kevss te Le woes seme Zesc tid Fe The above has written another "egg-head" article in which he makes light of the danger of sex offenders and he indicates that he and his associates are firmly convinced that "lurid" warnings to children Concerning sex offenders "tend to encourage a sort of paranoid fear of all strangers and all men" without preventing any significant number of offenses. He Says that the man who molests a child is usually not a stranger but Someone who knows the child. He Says that sexual crimes are far rarer than the headlines would indicate. His article is a summary of his book which will appear in July, 1965, and is the first of two articles to appear in this publication summarizing his book. The article to appear in June. will explain the misconceptions held by both sexes Concerning the attitude of each other toward sex. __ Bufiles reveal Gebhard was contacted in July, 1957, by the Bureau at Indiana University in connection with the collection of obscene material it held - for use in connection with its research. Gebhard declined to furnish the names of _ persons who furnished ‘theni the material since he had promised ‘his sources not to ~ reveal their identities, 7 —_ OBSERVATIONS: There is, of course, no way that Gebhard or the Bureau can determine how many children have been saved from being molested by increased by .9 percent.
