NY 92-911 _ _. a 2. ew Jersey Law Fnforcement Council (NILEC) Investigation and Other Titerested 4; oncies In the January 7, 1956 edition of the "New York Daily News" an article appeared stating that the NJLEC opened their heaiing in Newark, New Jersey, and that Captain CHRIS CLEITSMANN and Detective Sergeant PETER J. POLICASTRO of the West New York, New Jersey Police Department appeared before this council. They were questioned concerning their efforts to intercede with the New York State Police in October, 1955, on the speeding arrest of CARMINE GALANTE. It was alleged by the New York State Police that Captain GLEITSMANN offered a $1,900.00 bribe to Sergeant EDGAR CROSWELL to keep GALANTE from jail on a traffic charge. In connection with this bribery attempt, an article appeared in the "New York Herald Tribune", dated January &, 195%, which 1s set out as follows: "District Attorney LOUIS GREENBLOTT, at the behest of Acting New York State Investigation Commissioner ARTHUR L, REUTER, said the bribery matter would be turned over “at once' to the Broome County Grand Jury. The bribery attempt was allegedly made near “Binghamton in Eroome County. "Captain GLEITSMANN and Sergeant POLICASTRO were suspended from theis pests by Police Chief FRED ROOS or West New York, whe is also under subpoena in the case but is too ill to testify. “Commissioner MODARELLI was suspended from his extra $5,000-a-year job in which he handles - 52 - !
