fo THE VIETNAM TRAGE. A Vigil of Concern We stand in siient vigil to express our concern: American soldiers are dying in a country thousands of miles away-- . Where we are unwanted Where we arc objects of fear and hatred We arc there--we say--to protect freedom Is the cause of freedom advanced by continuing the war in Vietnam ? In this civil waz thousands of Vietnamese are being killed and tortured, their villages, fields and nomes burned. They have iived under a series of repressive, corrupt governments which have never becn elected and are main- taincd only by American pow 4s the war goes on, the Viet Cong continues to grow while the government becomes we2ker and iess popular, Last year 33,000 government troops de- serted, 30,060 of whom joined the Viet Cong. In spite of all our arms, soldiers and money (we are spending 2 million dollars a day) there is no freedom in South Vietnam, er, Is the cause of freccgom advanced by expanding the war in Vietnam ? Escalating the war in Victnam by borabing bases in the North will meen more people killed, more villages and homes destroyed, more Vietnamese who will hate the ‘White American Imperialists! as they callus. It may mean intervention dy the Soviet Union and China. It could mean World War UI. It docs not mean more freedom, Is this a chance worth taking? Can the cause of freedom be advanced by stopping the war in Vietnam ? If we were to withdraw our support, the war would be over in wecks, We could bring the matter to the United Nations, We could call for a reconvening of the l4-nation Geneva Conference. --It is possible that all of Vietnam could be neutralized-- --It is possible that elections could be held under a UN presence that would bring a representative governr --lt is possible that using. even part of the funds we are now spending on the wax we could assist in projects that would help eliminate poverty, disease and hunger in Vietnam and other countries of Southeast Asia~- This is the fabric of fecedom~-this is the chance worth taking! Uf you share this concern, wilt you join us in our silent vigil, We especially urge our fcllow /mericans: To WRITE OR WIRE President Johnson , The White House Washington, D. C. WAR! to NEGOTIATE! Urge him to SND Ti POLO ,#d Hoc Committee To End The War ISN Vietnam---431 S, Dearborn---HA 7-
