the United States has a higher evtandard of living,
there are more poor people here, ‘“wo-fifths of the
population of the United States - 77,090,000 people -
live in substandard conditions, he said, adding,
“These are not my figures.” Ke ascribed the poverty
to Capitalism, stating that under Socialism, with peaceful
competition among the workers, the Soviet Union has
advanced amazingly since 1917. "This country has grown
fat on war," he declared. We should’gvant peaceful
coexistence and let the countries of the world compete
peaceably, he said.
To the question of why there is ar.ti-Semitism in
the USSR, Mr. JOHNSON replied that anti-Semitism is
against the law. He said that t eli soziety cannot
be completely uprooted by a "Pecple's Revolution,” and
that some vestiges cf it still remaic; thus, some Soviet
people are still anti-Semitic. He commented parenthetically
that those of us who are white have not done nearly
enough to erase racism in this country.
In response to another question, Mr. JOHNSON said
that no country today has true Communism. Socialism,
yes, he said, but not Commmism, Uommanism implies a
social attitude and discipline on the part of the people.
This must ccme from within the nation, he said, He
added that peaceful coexistence would lay the groundwork
for this attitude,
When asked if it was necessary fer the Communist
nations to take over the world in or3er to achieve true
Communism, Mr. JOHNSON replied that it was not necessary.
He was asked about the treatment of the Tibetans
by the Chinese, and replied that it was not necessarily
genocide, as it had been termed, but rather the logical
result of the age-long will of the Tibetan people to be
a part of China. .

Party of the U. S. A. and the Communist Party of the U. S. S. Re
