NATIONAL LAWYERS GUILD. .

A source advised on May 14, 1964, that it was his under-
standing that the National Lawyers Guild (NLG) was formed around
1936 in New York City and that the Chicago Chapter of the NLG
(CCNLG), which is affiliated with the natimal group in New York,
was formed shortly thereafter, possibly in 1937, by a group of
liberal progressive lawyers in protest against activities of the
American Bar Association which the claimed was a non-liberal,
non-progressive organization. The CCNLG has no established head-
quarters but occasionally uses the return address of its officials
on literature,
The "Guide to Subversive Organizations and Publications,"
revised and published December 1, 1961, by the Committee on Un-
American Activities, U.S, House of Representatives, Washington,
D.C., states as follows on page 121 concerning the NLG:

Cited as a Communist front which ‘is the foremost legal bulwark
of the Communist Party, its front organizations, and antrolled
unions' and which "since its inception has never failed to
rally to the legal defense of the Communist Party and individual
members thereof, including known espionage agents.'

"To defend ths cases of Conmunist lawbreakers, fronts have been
devised making epecial appeais in behalf of civil liberties and
reaching out far beyond the confines of the Communist Party
itself. Among these organizaticrs are the * * * National
" Lawyers Guild. When the Communist Party itself is under fire
these offer a bulwark of protection.
