LUCAC demanding Pecos probe Dist. 4, League of United Latin American Citizens today announced it is demanding an investigation into the arrest Thursday af United Farm Workers, Union organizers in Pecos, ‘Yexas. 4 { Ralph Murillo, director District 4, released a statement: “BASED ON THE recent event which tcok place in Pecos, Texas. District No. 4, League of United Latin American Citizens must condemn the outright violation of civil rights and the inhuman and unlawful acts which took place under the direction of the Sheriff of Reeves County, Texas, on Thursday. “Specifically, LULAC feels that Title 3, Section $4.03 of Chapter S4 of the Texas Family Code was completely violated by arresting chiidren and, «placing them in the same, tfacility with adult : criminals. “The Sheriff of 4 Reeves County deliberatel: refused to accept bond from a recognized bondsman of the state of Texas, a violation of our state laws. “Although it appears that the rights of the United Farm workers were violated, we are reserving comment on these matters urtil a complete in yesUganion is conducted— “LULA DISTRICT 4, has unanimously endorsed ‘the efforts of the United Farm Workers in Pecos, and has taken the following steps to try to assure that the laws of this country are carried out in the proper manner, “One: A special com-. mittee headed by Belen Robles, national vice president of Southwest LULAC, will begin ims" mediately an investigation into the matter. Two: LULAC District 4 will seek further action from our State and national offices. Three: LULAC Dist, 4, will demand that the At- forney General of the State sf Texas immediately porceed to investigate and correct the absence of justice ‘in Pecos. Four: LULAC No. 4 will seck assistance from Gover, Dolph Briscoe, U.S. Sen. John Tower and Lloyd Bentsen, the U.S. Attorney General and the Office of Civl Rights.” Murillo said that a gourp of 20 to 29 United Farm Workers — inclufing men, women and children — were conducting a peaceful march when they entered private property, according to the Sheriff, and were arrested for tres-passing.
