POTENTIAL FOR VIOLENCE BETWEEN UNITED FARM WORKERS UNIGN (UPW) AND FLORIDA SUGAR CANE GROWERS, CLEWISTON, FLORIDA, OCTOBER 1972 including United States Sugar Corporation which have organized into the Florida Sugar Cane League (FSCL). Sugar grown by the PSCL lies principally to the south and east of Lake Okeechobee, Florida. Sugar grown in South Florida represents approximately seven percent of the total sugar grown in the United States. The @ugar Growers have received permission to bring ia to p,the country approximately 9,000 Jamaicans to cut the vgugar and they will be paid about §2,25 per hour on a piece rate basis, Transportation and housing for the jamaicans is furnished. The princip&s period of sugar “4 cane cutting is annually from the latter part of | October through March. According to the “Palm Beach Post-Timas” the UPW is seeking to obtain wp to four to five dollars per hour for domestic labor in the cutting of sugar. The UFW is expected to attempt to get authorization from a majority of the workers to represent them. Since it is expected that the Sugar Growers wouid reject the union, the UFW would then organize a strike which could be successful only if all workers are willing to refuse to cross the picket lines.
