bua Und Wold Bi! Ye Ub ANVab BU Od Put Our government has announceu an H-bomb test in the Marshall Islands for me end of April. According to the press, the United States has exploded 65 nuclear bombs, Russia at Jeast 30, Britain 3. As US. citizens we cannot escape fesponsibility for the effects of our own tests. WHAT ARE THE PHYSICAL AND BIOLOGICAL RESULTS OF NUCLEAR TESTS? Dr, Williard F. Libby of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission has said that a weapon 500 times stronger than the Hiroshima bomb might have radioactive fall-out of 100,000 square miles. Nine leading world scientists (7 Nobsl -prize winners) said in 1955, “It is stated on very good authority that a bomb can now be manufactured which Be 2,560 times as_powertyl as that which destroyed Hiroshima.” -- —~-- --- a Man does not know the effects on human health of testing such bombs. We do know that everyone on earth is affected. We do know that diffusion of radioactive products, as the Pope said in his Christmas plea for renunciation of tests and bombs, “depends upon elements not under man’s control." We do know there are permanent genetic effects. . . Dr. H. J. Muller, Professor of Genetics at Indiana University and Nobel prize winner, said May 13, 1955, “the number of mutations produced by the bomb tests to date does not involve a significant delerioretinn in the genetic constitution of the populstion but does produce a lot of significant disabilities . . . they are far from negligible, they are in the tens of thousands." Or. A. H. Sturtevant of California Institute of Technoloay says, “the bombs already exploded will ultimately result in the procuction of numerous defective individuals if the human race itself survives many generations.” world takes this so seriously that the UN has appointed a Commission on Radiation Effects which has not yet reported. : - WHAT WILL BE THE POLITICAL RESULTS OF ANOTHER U.S. H-BOMB TEST? The Japanese government has asked our government not ta hold the fest. Our government has informed them that the test must proceed. Will Asien peopies see in this test a calious disregard for their safety? Will Russia | The be deterred — of be challenged to further and greater tesis? Surely it will increase the fear which now corrodes all ctfe: come the “ WHAT ARE ITS MORAL IN generati This is to defy the Creator of life. Does it not meen that in the last ancl PLICATIONS FOR US? ‘ling to 1ake chences with the health and lives of other peoples and of unbors « ysis we are willing to use means capable of destroying mar? to achieve the nuclear conisol end disarmament on which man’s future depends. Out of fear may cident” that starts the war all dread. We still have the opportunity to act riorally, wisely, humanly. For the United Stetes to give up this test might be a real ste; in the vicious circle of the nuclear armament race. Pp toward an infernational ban on tests, the first brean Galy wtremendcus outpouring of deeply folt conviction to President Eisenhower can accomplish this. Gh ts 5 what you can do if you agree that the test is wrong, or a mistake, or that the United States should make cancelation of the test an epportunity for creative action: 1. Write the President now. A brief letter will do. 2. Ask your friends to write him now. 3. These sheets are free.
