Dear Mr. Hoover:
Enclosed is a page fron the Gallipolis Daily Tribune
containing a letter to the editor which is nore or less self-explanatory.
The background for this is briefly as follows, OQ
I have been interested in the work of the American Friend
Service Comithes for a nunder of years and have no reason to \ doubt 3
validity or to question it in any way as an organization. ion
ani responsible citizen, I am on a local committee consisting of a r
of clergymen and service club lenders, the purpose of this connittee boin
to sponsor a visit at Gallipolis thie summer by a so-called "Poace Caravan"
of the Amsrican Friends Service Committee, This caravan consists of four
studente, threo of whom will be from foreimm countries who will visit in
the comunity for a week, specki NE at churches and service clubs atte: noting
to create potter underst. anding of the international problen which nreduces
the tensions of our present critical tines, Though, as I stated alove, T
have never had reason to suspect the Service Conaitteo of anything the leas’
bit subversive, and though I have admired their vork trerendously, I feol
that both sides of a question should be ccncidered. In other words, ar ¢
there 4s any evidence that the American Friends Service Co: tee is not |
completely above suspicion, I would Mike to know it,and conversely if it
4s above reproach fron a standpoint of subversion, waich I thdsk it Tt
beHeve thet the doubts cast upon it by Mr. Burnett should be ru
could think of no onp better to write to than you. I would wor
much, therefore, your cerments and, {£ you would care to oo 20, a 2
that’ eould be published by the locul new: eM, Cither in the for:
letter to the editor, or a statenct directly for publication.
