I~ 4/2/74 \ Dote of trenacription JERRY COHEN, Chief Counsel, United Farm Workers, (UFW) Keene, California telephonically stated that — ° at approximately 3:00 P.M,, April 1, 1974, he received e telephone call from XYRED SCHWARTZ who advised as follows: + He needs immediate cash for bail of between $600 - $1,000 and in return is willing to sign a statement implicating certain California growers in 16 burglaries. He indiceted bond was between $6,000 - $10,000 and said "we need bell bad.’' SCHWARTZ said he contected an attorney "up north"' who told him other matters should ‘be resolved before contact with the FBI. SCHWARTZ sounded very desperate during the conversation, He mentioned thst one of the persons involved in the burglaries had nine children, COHEN said be had conferred with UFW Director, CESAR CHAVEZ concerning what course to take and CESAR told bim to “esk the FBI." COHEN said that he had recommended no money whatsoever be paid SCHWARTZ.
