FORMERLY MMORKERS PARTY (WP
The May 4, 1942, iseve of "Labor Acticn", thén an official
publication of the Workers Purty (WP), corried an article which
reflected that the WP was formed in Aprii 1940, as a réenlt
of a split within the leaders:ip of the Socialist Yorkers Party (SWP).
The article stated that when the lWitler-Stalin Pact was sign:d and
Poland invaded, the minority group within the SwP, in proclaiming
the formation af the WP, condemned the pact cs being incerialistic
in nature and stated 1¢ would not support either imperialist camp.
The April 25, 1949, issue of "Labor Action" contained
an account of the Fifth National Convention of the WP, held March
24-27, 1949, in New York Gity, which reflect-d the change of name
of the organization from the WP to the Inde;stndent: Sociziist League
(ISL) in order to cmphaiize the character of the group +3 a
propaganda group for the spreading of socialist ideas w:d nct asa
full-fledged political party.
The July 14, 1958, issue of "Labor Action", an official
publication of the ISL, contained an article capticned “The ISL
Program in Brief." The article indicated: "The ISL stands for
socialist democracy and against the two systems of exploitation
which now divide the world: capitalism and Stalinism. The ISL,
- €8 a Marxist movement, looks to the working class and its ever-presen'
Struggle as the basic progressive force in society. The ISL is
organized to spread the ideas wf socialism 4i: tr: Jabor movement and
among all other sections of the people. ‘here can ve no lasting and
genuine Gemocracy without socialism and there can be no socialism
without democracy."
The September 22, 1658, issue or "Iabor Aztion" contained
an undated statement sigred hy the Political Committee of the ISL
which indicated that the ISL nad been dissolved. The statement
urged former ISL members to jcin the Socialist Party - Social
Democratic Federation.
The SWP has beem designated by t~ Attorney General
pursuant to Executive Order 10450.
A source advised on May 21, 1958, that the San Francisco
Bay Area Branch, Independent Socialist League, was an adjunct of the
National Organization. The Branctt had representation on the National
Cemmittee of the Independent Socialist League; it participated in
the campaigns of the Independent Socialist League, and contributed
financially to the suppert of the National Organization.
The source advised on August 11, 1958, that the San
Francisco Bay Area Branch, Independent Socialist League, had
dissolved itself and the members had joined the Local Branch of the -
Socialist Party - Social Democratic Federation.
