Peace and Socialism ~ = @ source advised on March 25, 1965, that during the period January through March, 1962, a series of formation meetings to establish a “Socialast Youth Organization", was held in the Los Angeles area. LEONARD POTASH was acting chairman in charge of the group and PAUL ROSENSTEIN and FRANKLIN ALEXANDER were named to a provisional committee to help organize the new group. On April 3, 1962, the group orficzally selected the name of Los Angeles Youth for Peace and Socialism (LAYPS), and elected officers. A second source advised that POTASH, ROSENSTEIN, and ALEXANDER as of 1963 were all members of the Southern Calafernia Dastrict Communist Party (SCDCP). A third source advised on May 12, 1964, that the LAYFS was organized with the full knowledge and assistance Of DOROTHY HEALEY, chairman of the SCDCP and that severai . Communist Party (CP) members had been approved by HEALEY to teach Marxist theory to wembers of the LAYPS. This source further advised that the LAYPS was to be a Marxist study and action group and that the teachings of KARL MARX were to pe followed. Source also advised that altinough the alleged purpose of the group was to promote "Socialism" in the United States, the group considered themselves to be “Communist Party Orientated" and were anxious to study the brand of Warxism associated with the CPUSA. The first source above further advised that in June, 1953, LAYPS changed the name of the organization to Youth Action Union (vau) for two reasons: The first being that at wis relt that LAYPS had yaaned a bad reputation beeanse Of ats association with CP groups, vie second because at was felt the word "“Socialasin" an the tatie was dravaing away possible recruits.
