The following is IVINS' response to During the First Gulf War in 1990-1991, there was a secret army project, called "Project Badger," in which researchers tried to find out if they could dilute the currently licensed human anthrax vaccine and still have it remain efficacious. The war caught people here off-guard, and we apparently didn't have enough full-strength vaccine for all the troops (400,000+) going over there. Since it was believed that Iraq had anthrax as a biological weapon, it was deemed of high importance to make sure that the troops had both vaccines and antibiotics, should the agent be used against them. Years afterward, the project was revealed and discussed in an article in "Vanity Fair." We had a lot of laughs about it, since we in our division had been left in the dark about the whole thing, especially the part about it being named "Project Badger." I was doing a lot of anthrax vaccine research at the time (the late 1990s), and one day our _ division chief walked in and said, "I need to talk to King Badger!" The name stuck. So, when I got an AOL account, I tried to get "KingBadger" as my handle, but somebody else already had it. So I settled for "Kingbadger7."
