He sent his resignation te the secre tary of war and explained why he did so in a letter to Mr. Roosevelt. To Mr. Roceevelt the colonel said he had hoped he might exercise his rights as an American citizen to plece his view point before the people of the country ia time of peace without giving up the privilege of serv- ing his country as an air corps officer im the event of war. - “But aincs you, in your capacity as President of the United States and commander-inchief ef the army,” Lindbergh wrote, “have clearty tay plied that I am no Jonger ef use to this country ‘asm reserve officer, and In view of ether im “plications that you. my President end my su perior officer, have made concerning my loyalty to my country, my character, and my motives, I can see no honorable alternative to tendering my resignation es colonel in the United States Air Corps Reserve.” ‘Mr. Roosevelt told the reporters last week that Col. Lindbergh had not been called for ac- tive service because the army had mo place for Vallandighams, Vallandigham was a morthern traitor in the Civil war.
