Wee LI IE LEE | . - Shh SSS SS ih C00819160 apeaies . a April 6, 1956 - Profile of the University of Cali fornia My arrival at the University of California on the morning of Harch 6 seenct to be » complete chock to all concerned. Dean Blaicdell, tho had presumbly been resj onsible for naking prerazasions for my visit and vho had promised to attend a meeting that day with | other members of the administration and the student body, hed left the day before for Wash~ | dngton. I spent the first half of the day trfing to fini some plece to stay in Zerkeloy. The next half of the day I spent trying to get in touch with Kr. Fotert Familton, President of the Assoctated “trients of the University of California. I finally maneged to catch Bod Ranilton in tis effice by posting myself outside the door for about an hour end e half. During the course of our twenty mime to helf hour conversation, it became perfectly ob- vious that Bob Yenilton imew nothing of the Yorelan Stulent Leadership Project and had com. pletely forgotten, if he ewr kuew, about m visit to the camns. Deseribing the Forcigna - Studert Leadersair Froject to him, I begmm to ask questions about the nature and fimetion of the Student Association and particularly about the foreign student progran. fr, Hanilton had very little idea of the operation of the foreign stwient program at the University of California, "is conenrns with resvect to the Associated Studente seemed very much linited to a techricsi cz* administrative anrroach. After wy deserintics of PSLP, its objectives and the progran vhich wis deing plannoad, : i he seemed to bews~c mthusiestia and {nvited me to meal: to 8 meeting of the insociated Stue Gents which vas ts taze rlace that very afternoon. I attended the necting, addressed the Associated Stuiert: deceribing FSIP, and elicited several intaresting and pesetreting ques- tians fro~ various embers of the Associated Students as vell as from some of the adminis- trative personnel ~ho y ere present. However, since this was ths first and ori> cantact that any revrerorctive student preup at the University had with tre Pslr, i dours very sertoudiy thst c deer impression wes made or that the -rogran was wel: munile-‘stooi or that we conld expoct & groat desl of surrort on the basis of this onc encounter. I stayed through the Associated Stuiente!’ meeting long enough to ret the Slavor of tue tz-.o of discussion rad tho corcerns which seemed to be paramomt. The discussion vhica i-roducet the rost lively oncesn revolved arvand the athlctic program and the pors’ng zrobles, My observation: on this yartienlar necting should not be construed to be o gencral conmentasy of S2¢ oreseall effectiveness, function and concerns of the Associate: Students at the Uniwercitr cf California. Hovever, with discussians of other msnbers of the Counsil, {neluding Alex 3eidin, the BSA Coordinator, I wae led to believe that the meetin; which 7 attended was rot 6+ al] untyyical and that there was a great deal of concern anonz certain nenbers of the Assncieted Students that their interests and their actions vere lizited to relatively ineianifieant areas of concern. The Associated Students and ito.operations are considered by rost within the Asseciation as well ac outside to be those of c faisly large business concerr. tith a tudges of some $1,000,000 annually and with the canzlcte @ntrol of the athletics crogram and with the problems of the recomition and the adoinistrative relationships to more than 300 student organizations, The occasioas for the Associated Students to involve itself in some of the deeper problens concerning ctudent’ wilfers, ; edueationel problems emi humsn relations, for example, seemed to be extroordinar.ly linited. A prime examle of this is a report which I received fron sauder of the Comeil ints- cating that, saze couple of weeks rricr to my visit, the Stulent Association had been cone : fronted with the rossitility of taking action on the Autherins lucy case, Action ws post— i poned at the Council meeting is favor of discussion of certsin perking regzlatiozns, :
