The February (W949 -lssue of the "Washington Times
Hopald’ carried an article under the caption “Einstein Joins In
Protest of Military Might" which stated that Professor Albert
Einstein and seventeen other prominent citizens asserted the
day before that "the marked trend toward military control over
American life" had grown more dangerous than ever in the past
yeare
The article stated that in a 64 page report published
by the National Council] Against Conscripfion, they accused the
Army of spending nearly four million dollars during the fiscal
year of 1948 on "propaganda" to undermine the American tradition
of civilian control.
The article further steted that the group was concemeéd
over the “dominant position” of Defense Secretary Forrestal
“in the raking of foreign policy", and roundly denounced Fresicent
Trunmants plan for universal military training.
