ALCATRAZ
Mr. DeLoach's memorandum earlier today (June 13, J62) sé forth
information concerning a contemplated press conference by the {Bn -.
authorities regarding the Alcatraz escape. SAC Price was specffteally-
instructed by Mr. DeLoach's Office to take no part in such a prese conference
and in fact to make certain Agents completely stay out of sight fin fact a
press conference were held. : v7

_On the evening of June 13, 1962, SAC Price advised that the Bureau
of Prisons officials did hold a press conference at 10:30 a.m. this morning at
Alcatraz. Mr. Price has been advised by several newspaper men who attended
this conference that they were very dissatisfied with the information furnished;
that conflicting stories were given to them; and that they were not allowed
admittance to pertinent areas nor take any pictures. According to Price, these
newspaper men were generally disgruntled.
Price also advised that news articles are appearing in California
papers and one carried the heading "Alcatraz Safe--We Can't Get In." This
article carried a subheading "Cons Slip Out With Ease--How Safe is Alcatraz." ;

ACTION:
Mr, Price advised that the Bureau had absolutely nothing to do
this press conference and were maintaining the policy of making no comments
eoncerning this investigation, which is being pressed vigorously.
