Being one of those who shares some résvonsibility for the
Present position of the American Friends Service Commit-

public conscience,
I quote from A,F.S.,C. Annual Report for 1955:
"While our activities change from time to time; as any
one year's report will indicate, a basic and continusus,
tf not easily articulated philosphy runs through the
years of our history since the Committee's founding
in 1917."
"It is the faith that men are made for brotherhood and
not for strife; for mutual understanding and respect,
not for dislike and suspicion; for wholeness, not for
division. It is the confidence that personal and col-
lective well-being is dependent only in part upon phy si-
cal conditions, The issues of life are out of the he ast."
(Page 3)
Let us assume that as we read this superficially we
can agree with all it says Howe ever, through these words
there appears to be a stateme nt of policy emerging concern-
ing itself mainly with matters of conscience For examoale,
it is supposed that the employees of A, F.S, Cc, are better
judges than others of causes of strife, misunders tanding,
Suspicion, dislike? Who is to determine when, where and
in what degree personal and collective well-being requires
a“policy decision and action? What is "collective well-
being?" Does it .pertain'to pensions, wages, religious
belicts, rents or what?
