There has been a shift in the center of emphasis in Service Camraittce aetivity, Originally, t the Committee endeavored to do humbly and well a service to those in need, a service which others were neglecting to co. In this service, a better way of living was demonstrated, The process was humble and slow, There wre no strings attached. There was no vanfare and no publicity. Eut actions were cloquent in their portrayal of the Quaker message, Results were: 1. Quakers were drawn together in their Service Committee work, . 2. The approach to world problems was attractive and challenging to the public, Now, the center of emphasis in A. F.S,C, work is less on demonstrating our faith by service and more on influencing thought on various subjects which the A. F.S,C,. management feels should be promoted, Results are: 1, Quakers are being drawn apart by these activities, 2. Conflicts of views among Quakers are being broadly displayed to the public. Fields of activity and methods have shifted The Service Committce now sponsors mectings, conferences, “germi and camps in which leaders appear whose basic philosophies and sta of honesty are widely different fram those of the Society af Friends. It expresses views to the public on technical economic subjects. I into politices with policies determined at the head office, It publish articles {in some cases written by non-Friends) which support its parti- cular views or policy. Also, "findings" of certain conferences, seminars, referred to above, are published, When the content of these public ations is criticized, the common reply of Service Commitee personnel is that "These are not official statements of AL F.LS.C. policy."
