RIEBER advised that his knowledge of the shipping industry indicated to him that the Greek interests in the past. years had reteined excellent counsel, and that it was his understanding that all sales and purchases of ships by . the Greek interests were in absolute conformity with the . existing statutes and regulations. In this connection 73 RIEBER produced an original document from his file signed by : ROFERT BERENSON, President of the Trafalgar Steamship Corporation, which document warrants that the corporation is a citizen of the United States within the meaning of the Shipping Act, 1916, RIEBER provided a photostatic copy of this document, which is enclosed herewlth as enclosure number 21. RIEBER advised that neither he nor any of his ‘ ; associated officers were aware of the source of the money used for the purchase of instant tankers. He stated, however, that in his negotiations with OWASSIS, he had . ..insisted theat_as a condition of sale, the ‘tankers: were | . to be paid for in cash immediately pon the Signing of the ~: sales agreement. PS aT ee RIEBER further advised in connection with the sales conditions that at the time instant negotiations were being made, the two tenkers concerned were being operated ~ by the Texas Company under a five year charter for the purpose of coastwise shipping. RIEBER further advised in this connection that at the time of the negotiations, approximately one-half of the charter period had expired, and that it was the desire of the Texas Company to continue the coastwise operation of the ships for the life of the charter. RIEBER advised that because of the existing charter arrangement with the Texns Company,he insisted that as a condition of the salo ONASSIS would agree to allow the Texas Company to approve of the sale and the result ing transfer of the charter.
