BRECHT .:~.. stated that he was last a citizen of Germany, although “expatriated" by _ that country. He alge stated that he was born at hugeburee Germany, February 10, 1098. Aenea was accompanied by his wife, HELEN NEIGE-BRECER, and a son, STEFAN,- Qnd BARBARA, 12 years of age. He declared his intention te becom: a eitizen of the United States on Decesber 5, 19/1, at Los Angeles, California. He registered as an alien enemy in February, 1942, Registration Mo. The records of the Immigration and Maturalization Service, Los Angeles, reveal that BRECET filed a "Formal Intention" to become an Amerioan citizen in 19,1 but has done nothing further towards securing " final oitisenship papers. Informants have advised that BRECET has intended te return to Germany ever since his arrival in the United States, and, in 19L4, he went to San Francisco for the purpose of consulting the Czeoh Consul, one BENES, about seauring a passport. When advised that an exit vise from the United States might not be granted, BRECHT and HANS EISLER are alleged to have commented: “Well, the border is near-by." BRECHT*S COMMUNIST HISTORY GHEE, advised tint they know i. ant Ure. BRECHT EE ere they were Ccamunists; that their political attitude at that time was evidenced in their activities, associates, and the writings of BRECHT. stated that he imew BRECET by reputation in Germany, where he was an associate of persons with Commmict inolinations. He aleo stated that BRSCRHT worked on the picture “Hangeen also die," in the production of which he acted as story writer and technical advisor on underground activity in Burope. also stated that subject’s knowledge of the underground was attained through personal experience, as subject was imprisoned by the Nazis at one time, and it is believed that he had been severely treated by the Mazis. ha informed that BERT BRECHT @as in Los Angeles in the early part of 19 This informant described BRECHT as a Comaunist Party thiser, and stated that BRECHT was one of the group that formed the Communi st ryeetiy Musie group under the direotion of Professor ELL.
