sentry gate during the pertinent period on April 10, 1957,
advised that he was at the sentry gate when the subject
was returned to the United States Coast Guard Station shortly
after 1:00 PM on April 10, 1957. He stated he talked with
the subject for approximately ten or 15 minutes after the
subject had returned to the Coast Guard Station after lunch
and thereafter did not see the subject.
He stated that between approximately 10:00 and
11:00 AM on April 10, 1957, he had a conversation with the
subject at the Coast Guard Station and at that time the
subject told him that he, the subject, felt bad, felt
cooped up, and felt like taking off. He stated the subject
told him that his wife had not called him recently and this
apparently was effecting him. WALTERS told the subject that
if the subject took off, the fellow in the tower at the
Federal Correctional Institution would probably get him
before he got fifty feet. The subject told WALTERS that
probably that was right. WALTERS stated he felt the subject
was just joking and had no idea that the subject would
attempt to escape. WALTERS advised that he did not see
the subject attempt to escape.
On April 10, 1957, GEORGE W. ELLIOTT, Bliacksmith's
Helper, United States Coast Guard, Terminal Island, who
resides at 1025 East Sist Street, Long Béach, California,
telephone number Hemlock 5-0640, advised that his clothing,
consisting of biue siacks and a terrycloth white shirt with
a blue and white collar, were stolen from his locker in
Building 13 at the United States Coast Guard Station, Terminal
Island, California. ELLIOTT advised that his locker was not
locked, He stated that he did not give the subject permission
to take these clothes.
GEORGE W. ELLIOTT identified the slacks and terry-
cloth shirt which were worn underneath the subject's work cloth-
ing when the subject was apprehended by Associate Warden
ROBERT I. MOSELEY.
These items were photographed and were returned to
ELLIOTT by Associate Warden MOSELEY.
On April 11, 1957, RONALD LEE REED, United States
Coast Guard Serial Number 316279, who is assigned to the
Coast Guard Cutter "HEATHER" (W331), United States Coast
Guard, Terminal Island, California, advised that the 1949
Chevrolet convertibie, license number KZBO099, is his
vehicle, He stated that he had parked this vehicle on the
