Ii will now be up to the conviction jury in later’
sessions to decide the penalty for the killings — life in
prison or death in San Quentin Prison’s gas chamber.,
The jury’s verdict was filed with the court at 11:46
a.m., and the convictions were announced by the court
clerk in a somber reading of the jury forms over the
space of 20 succeeding minutes. The jury informed Su-
perior Court Judge Charles Older it had reached the
verdicts at 10:15 a.m. — 42 hours and 40 minutes atten
deliberations began Jan. 15.
Jury Foreman Herman Tubick, 4 Monterey Park
(mortician, handed the verdicts to Judge Older. who re-
viewed them and passed them on to Court Clerk Eugene}
Darrow to announce.
After the jury was polled, Judge Older announced
that the penalty phase of the trial will start Thursday
to determine whether life imprisonment or the death
penalty is imposéd against the 36-year-old. Manson and
the co-defendants — Patricia Krenwinkel, 23: Susan At-}
kins, 22, and Leslie Van Houten, 21.
The defendants all entered the courtroom smiling
and remained calm throughout the reading of the ver-
idicts, although the cult leader blurted out at thé end:
“We're still not allowed to put on a 1 defense Lae
You won’t outlive that, old man.”
This. remark apparently was aimed at Judge. Ol
Wer. The defense rested.its case without calling a single
witness.
Manson did take the stand for 90 minut® during
thetrtar-but the jury was not present, andé refused
to repeat his story for them.
During that ‘appearance on the stand, Manson gave
a rambling discotirse on his philosophies about life and
society, but talked little about the case at hand.
However, he did say he had killed no one, and
order one killed. ——
