~ TO FROM SUBJECT: xr *OPTIGNAL FORM No, 19 © MAY 1962 EDITION GSA Fem (41 CoR} 101-11,6 UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT Memorandum FILE (164-81) SAC, SEATTLE NORJAK On 11/9/73, SAC MATTSON called from Portland. He advised that on 12/10/71 the Wilsonville, Oregon Branch of the National Bank of Oregon was held up by a lone robber. At the time the robber entered the bank, a customer was being served by a teller and on the customer leaving the robber approached the teller, held herup and departed. The teller advised that while waiting for the customer to depart the robber had gone to a desk at the side of the lobby where he did some scribbling. In conducting the investigation the Agent recovered from this area a note with the name "D. B. Cooper" printed on it. Suspecting that ARVIDIS KIPERTS was the individuals b6 who perpetrated this robbery in preparing the affidavit b7C for a search warrant at KIPERTS' home in Vancouver, Washington, on 11/3/73 allusion was made to this incident. Subsequent to the search of the home and recovery of KEPERTS' diary and a substantial number. of guns there has been a lot of notoriety attached to his arrest and one of the newspaper reporters has noted this reference in the affidavit. The newspapers are now running stories linking KIPERTS with the captioned case. KIPERTS' diary recovered from his home shows that on 11/24/71 he attended an auto show at the Collesium in portland, Oregon From 11/25-29/71, lie visited Bellevue. His diary also reflects that during this time, specific date not shown, he purchased a gun at the Bazaar (probably Gov-Mart Bazaar) in Renton. It is a 30-30 Marlin lever action carbine and they believed he paid $105 for it. The description of KIPERTS does not resemble that of the Unsub in this case. However, I suggested to SAC MATTSON that if they have a photograph of KIPERTS that it be shown to the witnesses in Portland. S/ 5 ~O/ — 5O. in I telephonically contacted ASAC San Diego and advised him to furnish a photograph of bIc KIPERTS taken after he was arrested by San Diego put in the hands of a pilot courier at once and get it to us as quick as possibile.
