DU BOIS wrote an article for that issu ‘which he reviewed the book®"Stolen Era" by ANNA LOU STRONG, In the review Dr.DU BOIS summarizes the efforts the author and stated, "The book ought to be required eading for all sed and frustrated commentators \ on Socialism in this day. ee _ ° - fhe Congressional Committee dn Un-American Activities, | House Report No. 1953,0n the Congress of American Women, April 26, 1950 (originally released October 23, 1949), page 75, cites "Masses and Mainstream" as follows: a. - "The successor to New Masses, ‘a Communist magazine,'" . The September 1956 issue of "Mainstream" carries a@ notice inside the cover which explains that beginning the September 1956 issue, the name ,""MAsses and Mainstream" has been changed to "Mainstream." . 4 a ~ * a. Committee to Aid Families of Smith Act Victims On July 19, 1956, @MBBBR who has furnished reliable information in the past, furnished a two-page written pamphiet 4ssued by the Committee to Aid Families of sme Smith Act Victims, 575 Avenue of the Americas, Room 805, New York City, and a one-page letter from Dr. W.E.B. DU BOIS, 31 Grace Court, Brooklyn, New York. In the letter Dr. DU BOIS requested con- tributions top pupport of the families of the Smith Act victims and related: 7 a _— . "There are many Americans like myself who believe that the several victims of the Smith Act now in jail or free. on bail are being unjustly persecuted for ,the; political and social beliefs which they honestly noua."
