Nease . fe tes i SUBJECT: ELLIOTT NESS FORMER SAFETY DIRECTOR i see CLEVELAND, OHIO br Noloeee : Gandy. nie wae «: the Scripps-Howard Bureau called, He stated that his Cincinna iiice had asked him to find out if the above-named ‘individual had ever been assigned to the Cincinnati Office of the FBI, possibly for the purpose of cleaning up prohibition violators in Kentucky in the early days. ‘He stated that he did not know the reason for their inquiry. oC I told cameoneregcs oe the answer to his question was no; that be had not been assign e olfice of the FBI in Cincinnati, I teld him that for his background information, so far as we knew, Ness had been employed _ jas a Prohibition agent under the Internal Revenue Service from August, 1926, until Jufé, 1929, at which time he was transferred to the Bureau of Prohibition in the Department of Justice, but that this work had subsequently been trans- ferred back to Internal Revenue in 1933, [told him that during a portion of the time the Prohibition Unit was under the jurisdiction of the Attorney General it 1jhad been under the immediate jurisdiction of the Bureau, but that it had never {| been integrated as such with what is known today as the FBI. I suggested to him that he might wish to check with Internal Revenue Service to determine whether Ness had ever been assigned by them to the Cincinnati area. Qur files do reflect that in August, 1933, Ness was reappointed fas a Senior Prohibition Investigator in the Internal Revenue Service located fat Cincinnati, I thought it best, however, to let Mr, Bridwell determine this from Internal Revenue Service. &, RECORDED - | | Vian INDEXED 4p *% €2-s6 LOGS 7 an heed 7 he. hoe AA) iy eg eee F .
