Identificetion Division a
Tle Identification Division of the United States Bureau of _
investigation is meinteined at Weshington, D. C., and wes established
on July 1, 1924, to operete as e netionel clearing house of identification oe
data. At the dete of its inception, it tegan with approximately 899,000
fingerprint resords whith had comprised the collections of the bureau
mainteined at the United States Penitentiery, Leavenworth, Kansas, end
of the Netionel Burecu of Criminsl Identificetion, Weshington, D. C.,
which hsd been opercted by the Internttional associetion of Chiefs of
Police.
Since its estatlishment in 1924, the Identification Division . os
of the United Stites Pure-u of Investigrtion his hed e« phenomenal a
froren. During the fiserl yerr of 1932 tlone, it received over 573,000
fingerprint errds.
On Fetruery l, 1933, there were more than 3,386, 000° Tinger-

print records cn file, representing the lerpest and most complete
collection of criminsl fingerprint records of current value existing
enywhere in the world. This division now receives criminal identification
date from over 5,390 eontributors in the United States and foreign
ecuntries, end receives more then 2,900 fingerprint cards each dey, ee
replying to eech of these cards within 36 hours,
