Other objects of the personal “equipment” of POWERS:
Soviet rubles, French francs, gold watches, wedding bands. A strange
cargo for a plane which wanted to reach great heights! But the secret
is simple: According to the idea of the "strategic psychologists" of
the United States of America, all this was destined to bribe the Soviets.

The chiefs gave to the aerial pirate a special needle with
a poison of fulminating action. The spy was to use it in case he was
in danger of being taken prisoner. His chiefs gave POWERS the following
instructions: Not in any event to fall into the hands of the Soviets! He
did not prefer this command. He preferred to live. He delivered himself
into the hands of the Kolkhoz inhabitants of the Ural Mountains without
resistance and without the least intention of utilizing the terrible needle.
