In connection with Sinatra's appearance in Detroit during — May, 1946, Mr. Nichols submitted a memorandum concerning an incident - which occurred in Detroit on May &, 1946, involving Sinatrae Hr. a Nichols pointed out that Sinatra bad eluded a large gathering of an bobby-soxers who had gathered at the airport te greet Sizatra when he arrived around midnight and that subsequently a large group gathered in front of the stage dcor of the. Down Town Theater where he vas scheduled to give his first performance around 10:00 A.Me, May 8, 1945. Thig line started to form around 2:00 A.M., and the police attempted to break it up by challenging those who appeared to be sixteen years of age or under in an attempt to send them home, In addition, truant officers began checking the line of bobby-soxers and there was in general wideepread indignation on the part of numerous individuals contacted by Mr. Nichols during his vieit who severely eriticized the parents of the girls walting for Sinatra The Director noted on Mr. Nichols memorandun, "Sinatra is as much to blame as are the moronic bobby-soxers. 4H." Tenney, Chairman of the Un-American Activities Committes of the California State Legislature, testified before the House Committee on Un-American Activities on March 26, 1947, at which time he named Frank Sinatra as a sponsor of the AYD.
