Re: Edmund Gerald Brown communist causes and communist fronts and of Brown's efforts to enlist support of his political endeavors from communists and from communist fronts. It has been obtained from aighly confidential sources, in some instances quoting Brown's own words, and some are hearsay. If AEC denies Brown a clearance it will nave tc furnish him a statement of charges and back them up witn witnesses. The sources of this infor- mation would not be available for use in any resulting hearing, cannot be divulged, and while reliable for intelligence purposes, cannot be substantiated even if they could be divulged: The names of Edmund Gerald Brown and were contained in an anonymous confidential communication dated 3/1/39, received by this Bureau, whicno alleged tinat they had actively assisted communists in tne San Francisco, Calizornia, area in their legal troubles. No further details are available in this matter. (62-76249-11, ps. 5) . (Tesur, 62-76249-19) an ‘informant advised this Bureau that On 12/10/43 a “contacted prown“and ‘advised. bim.taate the NLG was pian | toO_pive™ uncheoa’forzhim.] Brown and then discussed the Guild and Brown stated that "In my heart I agree with you people put I sometimes differ with your methods.'' The NLG has been cited as a communist front by the House Committee on Un-American activities. (Tesur, 62-76249-19) An informant advised this Bureau on 8/11/44, that Brown was a close personal friend of of San Francisco, a known communist wao was active in he aftairs of the California Labor School. Tne California Labor School has been designated by tne AG of the U. 35. pursuant to E.O. 10450. (Tesur, 62-76249-139) An informant nas advised this Bureau that in 11/44, one a known communist, was requested to obtain publicity and aid for District Attorney Edmund Brown in connection with Brown's investigation of the "Mothers, Wives and Sisters of USA," allegedly an'antiadministration" organization in San francisco. (62-76249-1l, Dé 3) A highly confidential source has advised this Bureau that in 12/44, an unknown man nad peen contacting prominent people in San Francisco and informing them that the California Labor School was domi- nated by communists.
