~ An informant advised this*Bureau on 2/24/54 that-at-a special
executive -board meeting-ot the wast Bay Civil Rights Congress (CRC),
neld“thé~prevsous day_at Gakland,-California; “it was stated tnat a
delegation of individuals (unideatified),.. had contacted Brown regarding :
jhe Wesley nobert-Wells-case, concerning wnica tae CRC“was extremely
active@. (Wells is a Negro life-termer at San Quentin Penitentiary
sentenced to die in 3/54 for assaulting a prison guard.) Brown
reportedly asked the delegation if the implications in the Wells case
were political. ise was informed that taney were, that the delegation
controlled votes in various focal unions in Oakland and San Francisco
and that these votes migat be helpful to him if ne wanted to be governor
some day. Brown reportedly agreed to meet for further discussion of
