These’tapes were received from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in San Francisco, California. He has reviewed the messages with the help of * & qualified fellow-psychiatrist and he has completed his review and analysis. He advised as follows: There ere three possibilities as to PATRICIA . qu HEARST's involvement in her kidnapping and related ) acts: Ye One, she was in on it from the beginning and had some prior knowledge of her kidnapping. Two, at the time she was kidnapped and up to the present time, she is operating under total compulsion; that is, the "gun at the head" theory. In this context, she is not acting voluntarily. , ; Three, at some point in time after the kidnapping, members of the SLA were able to ‘achieve sincere conversion in her mind so that she became vaiuntary in subsequent -acts, The third category is comm§ily know as "brainwashing", it eee ei OUld subscribe to the theory that at tne ps nt time she is undéri almost total compulsion in recording the last tape and what ever subsequent acts ~ have become knovm since then.
