on™ . . . oN . . s BA 77-1097 7 a SJO;:djr oo an armed FBI raiding party attempted to rescue her. She has possibly been persuaded to believe this over a period of time since her capture. She also did have tremendous confidence in her father. He had been an omnipotent factor in her life. She has seen him almost totally dominate what ever he comes in contact with, yet in the present situation he appears almost helpless and she sees this, and so she has become confused to some extent. Additionally, also adding to the ability of the SLA to slightly persuade PATRICIA HEARST into being brainwashed is the fact thet the SLA are intelligent, articulate, and passionate radicals even though of a violent and terroristic nature. She has “no doubt been subjected to intensive political persuasion by these people. Since she is a relatively young woman of approximately 20 years of age who has possibly been exploring various political persuasions in recent years, she is a prime candidate for reacting favorably to intensive political persuasion or brainwashing. minanageoted that inthe first few tapes the voice of PATRICIA HEARST appears to be speaking her own thoughts in her owm wey. She was spontaneous, measured, and appeared sincere in expressing her fears while attenoting to reassure, Later in the tapes, her rhetoric becomes more that of the SLA and less that of PATRICIA HEARST. It is more stereotyped. It contains more of the radical jargon common to the SLA and similar grouns. In the last tape she sgunds like an: "automaton", probabiy reading a prepared script and speaking in a voice and tempo that does not et all appear to be comming originally from within PATRICIA HEARST. . moidvised that to reiterate his ovinion, -he feels A! wy v3 and including the point in time where she participated in the last tape, she is being motivated ovt of fear for her safety and would cease and desist from her participation in the tapes and whatever else she is doing with the SLA if she was, in fact, able to make her own choice. There is very little evidence to show brainwashing was successful in motivating her. Giese “<c:: that if PATRICIA HEARST continues to be suvjected to the SLA persuasions on a regular basis, there is a definite possibility that the amount of compulsicn necessary to nave her involuntary perform acts with the SLA will be reduced ane there will “mieten ut.
