Joh Clements, Washington representative of the iaelninnes
Hearst Cor ation, is a close personal friend of “Inspector
Quinn and has been in contact with my office on a daily basis in an
effort to be of assistance to us in any way possible with respect to
the Hearst Corporation in connection with captioned case.
Clements is aware through his contacts in the media of all
ublic statements made by the Hearsts regarding this case and was
eeply concerned when an item appeared recently in the gossip column
of one Herb Caen, “San Francisco Chronicle," to the effect that Billy
Hearst, nephew of Randolph Hearst, had indicated to Herb Caen that he
had no confidence that the FBI could solve this case nor did any
member of the Hearst family. According to Clements, Bill
now in New York and not accessible to the news media.
As you are aware, the deadline for the $4 million dollar food
plan which the Hearst Corporation is prepared to execute if Patricia
Hearst is returned safely to her family by midnight May 3rd, is virtually
upon us.
According to Charlie Bates, Randolph Hearst has spoken about
the possibility of offering a million dollar reward for information
leading to the safe return of Patricia Hearst following this deadline.
Bates' concern is that Hearst may decide to go ahead with plans to
offer this reward precipitously without affording the San Francisco
Office proper time to install additional phones to handle calls that
can be expected in connection with such a reward, it being noted that
a feature article appearing in the Sunday "San Francisco Examiner"
soliciting citizen assistance with respect to the 9 principal suspects
in this case, resulted in the San Francisco Office receiving 75
- telephone calls by persons offering information. It can be safely
enticipated that an offer of a substantial reward would Teo many
times that many telephone calls. | rea ql 1S 9 gd o- a 6/0
