Hearst, PreSident of San Francisco Examiner News- ! paper, who was abducted at gunpoint from her Berkeley, 7 California, apartment evening 2/4/74. Following summarizes pertinent investigative activity regarding this Major case: San Francisco Office (SFO) advised information received 2/7/74, indicates Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA) involved in victim's kidnaping. Information from SLA captioned “Communique #3"4 (true copy received from SFO) dated 2/4/74, in form of warrant, in essence advised that victim would be unharmed if all future instructions from SLA are followed. Bureau and SFO files indicate previous Communiques No. 1 and No. 2 from SLA appear comparable in many respects with Communique No. 3, i.e., format, verbiage and idioms. Communi- € ques No. 1 and No. 2 did, in fact, pertain to 11/6/73, killing & of Doctor Marcus Foster, Oakland, California, Superintendent “ of Schools, which were sent to various agencies including the daily newspaper San Francisco Chronicle. Superintendent Foster was believed to have been killed with bullets that had been | drilled and filled with cyanide. SFO also advised casings, bullet fragments and slugs earlier recovered by Berkeley Police Department (BPD) in con- nection with this case obtained by SFO and are being furnish- ed to FBI Laboratory 2/8/74, for appropriate examination; no examination conducted } BPD —_ Los Angeles Office (LAO) telephonically advised early a.m., 2/8/74, LAO Agents currently providing appropriate coverage Brea, California, Golf Course area where unknown male caller to Los Angeles Herald Examiner Newspaper 2/6/74, demanded oe $50,000 in this regard.
