Telephone Rm. ... in connection with a television interview this morning, Georgg’ Redding, a local television newsman in Oakland, California (Channel 2), indi¢ated that he had learned from someone in the Department of Justice that the FBI had brought SWAT teams into San Francisco. Bates indicated that he was caught by surpris« by the question; however, denied there was any connection between the presence of SWAT teams and captioned kidnaping case; indicating that they were engaged in training exercises. In response to questions he explained the SWAT team concept, noting that virtually every FBI office hasateam. | ' Along thé same ‘lines,. wcamayesce "Washington Post,'' called m office late this morning inquiring concerning SWAT teams, what they, consisted : what their role in law enforcement and the FBI was, and she was afforded a detailed explanation of the SWAT team concept to include the fact that a Metro- politan Police Department SWAT team was recently used to successfully remove a crazed individual who had been sniping at passersby from a building in Northw Washington.
