Berkeley, California, February 4, 1974, by individuals sub- a a sequently claiming to be members of the Symbionese Liberation fo Avmy (SLA). During Late afternoon May 16, 1974, information was received from the Inglewood, California, Police Department regarding an altercation at Mel's Sporting Goods Store, Ingle- | wood, California, during which an automatic weapon was fired. A white male, Later determined to be WILLIAM TAYLOR HARRIS, was suspected of shoplifting and an attempt was made by store em- ployees to detain him. HARRIS produced e two inch Colt .38 revolver, Serial Number C53256, and was disarmed by a store enn wie ot" ployee. That weapon determined to be registered to EMILY MONTAGUE ‘+ HARRIS, who was later identified as having accompanied WILLIAM TAYLOR HARRIS to Mel's Sporting Goods Store. During the struggle between the store employee and the HARRISES, a third individual, believed to be PATRICIA CAMPBELL HEARST, fired an automatic weapon in the direction of the store, at whic h time the HARRISES escepea, The HARRISES and HEARST fled the area in a 19790 Volkswagen van bearing California temporary license 5303850. 4 short time Later the trio commandeered, at gunpoint, a L970 Pontiac Le Mens, Cal- ifornia license 032 AND, in Los Angeles, Celifornia, and abandoned the van. They subseauent Ly abandoned the Pontiac in Hawthorne, ef. Califernia, and commandeered, again at gunpoint, a 1963 Chevrolet of Nova Station Wagon, California License GOE 575, effecting their , scape. A search of the 1979 Volkswagen van revealed a parking ., tiekes, indicating the van had been cited by the Los Angeles Pe Police Department (LAPD) on May 13, 1974, in the area of 835 Huon 7 West Sith Street, Los Angeles, california.
