On May 17, 1974; information rey ~- ceived from the San Francisco Office, FBI, that a 1964 Volkswagen van, California license 463 GMO, and temporary license 5306393, was sold on May 7, L974, and registered to ROBERTO BEY, 9lLL Fillmore, San Francisco, California, Further that a 1966- 7 Chevrolet van, California License 84650V was sold May 1, Lo74, “ - to Mrs. MARY LOPEZ, address unknown. At approximately 2:00 p.m., May 17, 1974, the LAPD advised that two vans had_been located at L451 East 53rd Street, Los Angeles, one bearing Californiz-—~ ~~ license 84650V. Subsequent investigation revealed that four white females, one white male, and one black male, all heavily armed, were currently inside a residence located at 1466 East Sith Street, Los Angeles, California, Further, these individuals had stated to various residents of the area that they were mem- bers of the SLA. Shortly before 6:00 p.m., May 17, 1974, LAPD SWAT Teams ordered the occupants of 1466 East 54th Street to surrender at which time a male Negro exited the residence. When no response was received from subsequent calis to surrender, tear gas was fired into the residence by the LAPD, This action was ES, met by heavy gunfire from the residence, which was returned by on law enforcement officers, including an FBI SWAT Team which had 7 be ney moved in to support the LAPD. Heavy gunfire continued and at a approximately 6:30 p.m., evidence of a fire tn the residence was observed, At approximately 6:45 p.m., a black female, later a identified as CHRISTINE JOHNSON, ran from the residence. At aN approximately 6:55 p.m., gunfire ceased, At approximately 7:00 . oR tee p.m,, Los Angeles Fire Department units moved in to control the fire. After the fire was extinguished the Los Angeles County ys Coroner determined that bodies located in 1466 East 54th Street eT were those of three white females, one white male, and one Negro rine male. Due to the condition of the bodies, no identification could be made at that time. On May 19, 1974, an additional body was located in the ruins and determined to be that of a white female. The deceased were identified by the Los Angeles “Ege eas _ County Coroner's Office as DONALD DAVID DEFREEZE, WILLIAM LAWTON wa es WOLFE, NANCY LING PERRY, ANGELA ATWOOD, PATRICIA MONIQUE SOLTYSIK, hos and CAMILLA C. HALL. On May 20, 1974, authorized complaint filed ye before United States Magistrate, Los Angeles, charging WILLIAM fAYLOR HARRIS, EMILY MONTAGUE HARRIS, and PATRICIA CAMPBELL: HEARST with violation of National Firearms Act, Title 26, Section 5861 (d), United States Code. $500,000 Corporate Surety bond recommendec for each individual named in complaint.
