the M1889 Belgian Mauser, The
11889 and other pre-M193 Mausers are
adily identified by the lack of front-
ching lugs and the straight box
agazine which projects below the
ock. The M93 and later models have
a staggered magazine and a floor plate
flush with the stock bottom. The M93
Turkish is a M93 Spanish Mauser ex-
cept for calibre, Turkish models are
equipped with a Mauser rarity—a
magazine cut-off. Models with dates
after 1900 are modified M98’s.
The 7.65mm Mauser is an excellent
calibre and is still the first-line Argen-
tine calibre. Other countries like Tur-
key are now using rifles in other cali-
bres like the 7.92 x 57 Mauser in addi-
tion to stocks of 7.65 Mausers. Belgium
has adopted the 7.62mm NATO but
stit] has large stocks of 7.65mm Mau-
sers.
Most of the various Mausers were
made in Germany or Belgium though
Argentina, one of the few South Amer-
ican countries with facilities for arms
and ammunition manufacture, has
manufactured some Mausers.
“The cartridge, beginning in 1900,
was manufactured in the states by Win-
chester and possibly other ammunition
companies. Though chambered for the
modified Enfield M30 Remington and
Winchester’s M54 and M70, the car-
~ trilge was never very popular in the
United States. Manufacture of the
7.65mm cartridges was not resumed
after World War I in the United
States. Recently surplus dealers have
offered surplus Argentine Mausers for
ale. Most of the ammunition now be-
—_
ing offered is full-metal-jacketed serv-
ice rounds.
Notes and Comments
This is a cartridge which, with ade-
quate bullets, can be used for all North
American game with the possible ex-
ception of moose, elk and brown bear.
