had an increasingly great influence in
Latin America, Mauser salesmen were
not backward in promoting the excel-—
lent products of the brothers Mauser.
Today, the 7mm is trending towards
obsolescence both as a sporting and -
military round, Many countries: for-
merly armed with 7mm’s now use
American Garands in 30-06 calibre.
Remington, after the Spanish-Amer-
ican War, sold 30,000 Remington-Lee
Military rifles to the so-called Cuban
Republic. Some countries like Mexico
which adopted the M95 Mauser in
7mm calibre purchased large quanti-
ties of Remington Rolling Biock
single-shot rifles and carbines.
The 7mm cartridge was probably
first loaded in the United States by
Union Metallic Cartridge Company.
Winchester began 7mm cartridge man-
_ufacture in 1899.
The 7mm did not come into general
use as a sporting cartridge in the
United States until after World War
I when Remington chambered its ci-
vilian (M30) version of the M17 En-
field for the cartridge. Winchester
chambered its excellent M54 bolt-
action and its even better M70 for the
calibre. M70 production in 7mm was
discontinued during the 1950's. Out-
door Life gun editor Jack O’Connor
purchased the last M70 in 7mm
calibre.
Notes and Comment
The 7mm never achieved wide-
spread acceptance in thiscountry butit .
has long had a very devoted coterie of
-- followers. Two weights of bullets, the
139-gr. and the 175-gr. were available

until the 1980's when the 139-gr. was
discontinued. This was an excellenty
bullet for use on medium game up
800 yds. The !75-gr. softpoint roun
nose is primarily a short range timbé
load for deer and bear. An expert rifl
man, under fair conditions, can take
anything on this continent with a 175- .
gt. bullet.
The 7mm or one of its improved
versions like the 7mm Ackley Im-
proved can be made up into a light-
weight rifle which is handy to carry, is
accurate and has no recoil objection-
able to women or youngsters.
The 710m was the favorite of the late
elephant poacher D. W. M. “Kara-
mojo” Bell who took over 1,000 ele-
phants with his 303 British and 7mm
Rigby. This feat of Bell’s is almost
invariably advanced as an argument by
small-bore high-velocity advocates.
