That van ’ was subsequently determined to. have been used by WILLIAM and FMILY HARRIS and PATRICIA HEARST. Initially, the van and its contents were examined for fingerprints and other items of an evidentiary nature, Soil samples were obtained at this time from the whee] wells but it was subsequently learned the vehicle had been painted in San ‘Francisco shortly before its ownership by the SLA, thus those soil samples were cone sidered inadequate. , 7 In an attempt to develop information regarding the ‘ travels of this vehicle in the Los Angeles area prior to 5/16/74, Los Angeles contacted the State of California Depart- ment of Mines and Geology to determine if that agency Ww undertake a thorough examination of soil samples. of that agency agreed to undertake such an examination and 9 personall collected soil samples and rock samp tes from the YX wheel wells, tires and interior of the van. This examination ae will be conducted to devclop characteristics unique to _ specific California areas, ; It should be noted that during the soil collection, the tires on this van were almost new and bore the Phillip's 66 brand.
