COOPERATIVE SERVICES
FBI LABORATORY
Now into its 43rd vear of operations, the
FBI Laboratory reuched record levels of uchieve-
ments in Fiseal 1975. Continuine its leading
role in the forensie science field, the Laboratory
conducted 41S2,060 examinations. Approximately
30 percent of these examinations were conducted
for agencies other than the FBI on a cost-free
basis.
A total of 44,198 requests were received by
the FBI Laboratory for the examination of 317,140
specimens during the fiseal vear. The 482,060
examinations conducted on these specimens
consisted of:
-181,777 dealing with document mutters.
—141,218 encoinpussing eamblyus, transla-
tion, and cryptunalytic matters.
-154,042 involving the physical, biological,
und chemical sciences.
-5,023 pertaining to electronics and acous-
Tics, .
The FB Laboratory also:
—Enlarged its proutum of assistance fo state
and local forensic science laborataiies.
~Trained over 700 state and local law en-
forcement personne] in specialized crime
laboratory topics.
=Provided expert witnesSes to testify in 865
cases in courts throughout the Nation.
~Assisted the FBI and other law enforcement
agencies in the solution and successtul
prosecution of nainy criminal cases, several
of which sained national prominence.
—Pubiished the ‘*Crime Luboratory Digest,"’
a monthly publication sent to ull lw en-
forcement crime kuboratories in the Nation,
highlighting information und research in the
crime haboratorys field.
-Contributed to certain areas of forensic
*sejence throush publication of technical
papers, resulis of surveys aud national
MO CTIOLS.
—Coniinned its uctive and productive te-
search und development program to insure

quality and up-to-date service to law en-
forcement upencies.
lu September, 1974, the PBI Laboratory spon-
sored the Second National Symposium on Crime
Laboratory Development, Unprecedented in the
history of crime laboratories in America, this
meeting brought together 166 leaders of police
crime laboratories from throughout ihe Nation,
Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and Canada, The
purpose of this ssmposium, which was held at the
FRI Academy at Quantico, Virginia, was lo de-
termine how the FBI Laboratory might better
assist other laboratories in their functions,
Also, during this symposium the American
Socicty of Crime Laboratory Directors was estab-
lished. This organization promises to provide
additional leadership toward upgrading profes-
sionuism of the scientific criminal investigator
and to increase coopération and commumeation
between all crime laboratories throughout the
Nation.
