_ In thetr early writings varx and Engels attempted to develop -.
- 8 phllosophy which got at the foundation on which political systens
". and hurcan interactions were organizede This proces: led them to
formulate the philosophy of dislectical and historical materialian.
This way of thought wes first concretely orystaltized in their
Joint work, The Ger-an Ideology, written in 1645and 1846. The
materialism of Marx and Engels represented a-new stare in the
~ ggefalist Moverent, the st:ge at which socialism became scientific
rather utopian. But Marx and Engels did not ston with the mere
creation of a philosoohy; for as Marx said,"the philosophers have
only interpreted the world dicferently, the point ts to chinge it."
From this point Marx and Engels moved 4n two directions.
Marx undertook a comprehensive analysis of capitalism {Cerital)
in order to show that within its own laws of motion, capitelisn
bore the seeds of its own cestruction. Both of them, working
individually and together, also put a lot of their energy behind
analyzing various historical and contemporery strugzles such as
the French Revolution of 1789, the aborted European revolutions
of 1848, and the Paris, gpecune of 1871. Their purpose in analyzing
these strug-les was to*how each event fit into the overall per-
spective Of international proletarian revolution and how an
improved understanding of dialectical materialism could have altenwed
sweremes the tactics and strategy of the participants in these
struggles.
