Providence ete
Then out of the side of your mough you tell the revctionaries
and vested interests that you don't really meen what you say.
That, ladies end gentleren, fia the Democratic perty policy. J think the
conment of Senctor Lister ill of Alabame about the southern revolt was most
apropos. Ye warned his colleagues not to leave the Democratic perty over civil
rights messures. He said: “If the south should leave the Democratic party we
would but weaken the very arm vith which ve battle those measures in the House
and Senate." °
The Republicans «re no better. They have consistently conspired with the
Democratea to lick civil rights legislation.
The other day when J apperred before the Sencte armed Services Comnittee
to present my objections to the plane for a draft and compulsory military training,
I bad a short exchange of views ‘ith Senator Morse, Wayne Moree of Oregon. The
Senetor and I sgreed that the fundamsntel of our American philosophy is respect
for the individual numen soul; and so I was rather startled to read his comments
the following day on the testimony of two Negro witnesses. These gentlemen said
that they would oppose the draft of Fegro citizens and urge resistence to such a
draft until segregztion was abolished. I think thet they should have opposed “at
on much broeder grounds ae well, on the grounds that the dreft and compul sory .
military traiaong will endanger the peece of the world and the civil liberties of
ell Americans, vhite and Hegro. Put the important thing to me was the suggestion
of Senate: Horse that vhet these men vere advocating might be "treason".
The Senstor. vith his avowed reepect for the individual buman soul,
suggerts the protests of igo people pgrinst modern forms of slavery could be
“treason”. Yct he sits t= the Senate of the United States and does not suggest
that come of his colleagues who help meintein serregation are really guilty of
trea.on - ar= really guilty of v:oleting the fundrmental law of the land, the
Conetitution of the United States with its gwrantees of civil righte. I would
haves expested a little better understanding of the individual humap eoul from
Wayne Noree. (wore)
