As reported in my letter of Noyember 19, 1947, officials of the
SCHW were incensed et a column of Mr. RALPH MoGILL, Editor of the Atlanta
Constitution, which sppsared in that paper on the morning of November 15,
Mr, HeGILL in his column mentioned the possibility of their being dis-
order during the WALLACE meeting, and he also made lightly veiled
allegations that the SCHW was following the Commmist Party line in the
i which the WALLACE meeting had been arranged, ; ording to
on the afternoon of Novenber 15, 1947, CLARK FORMAN told
WEST that he had already talked to THOMAS W. JOHNSON, an
attorney in Macon, sbout the possibility of entering a suit for criminal
libel against MoGILL and the Atlanta Constitution, FORFMAN said that a
telegram end letters had been sent to the Constitution demanding a
retraction of MeGILL's article and an apology. There was also contained
in the letters a threat for suit for criminal libel gal
During the telke preceding the address of Mr. WALLACE on
Noyember 20, CLARK FOREMAN and others made a number of derogatory
references to Mr. MeGILL and the Atlanta Constitution. It was noted
that the Atlanta Constitution gave no publicity whatever to the appe ar~
ance of Mr. WALLACE in Hacon or Atlanta.
