The Frogram
of EFS,
A. Pesident Prorram-
fo) Purnose- To provide a culturel and educational center
for the tr-ining of « native leadership for the southern
labor movement.
(bo. Progrom- Two resident terms 6 yerr, each lasting 81x
weeks. In the past these hrve cove in the summer and
winter. In 194% the resident terms will be held in the
Spring cnd Fall. This will le: ve the summer free for
week-end institutes for local end international unions.
The students cre carcfully selected by the educational
committees of their unions or co-operatives. There are
no formal educational requirements other than the ability
to read ond write and < desire to serve the libor move-
ment. One or two college students cre accepted each term
but such students must plun to work full time in the labor
movement or in social work. In the Winter Torm of 1939
27 students came from ten southern states, from San Antonio
to Richmond and represented 9 international unions.
The courses are grouped in two eategories: first, the prac-
tiexl "tool" courses in the work of the union, e.g. public
specking, snd parliamentary law, tri.de union problems, jour-
noalism, mimeogriphing, poster muking; and secondly, the
beckground und culturnol courses such as dremetics, cconomics,
folk duncine cnd group singing, history and recreational pro-
grems.
The methods are a combinction of lectures, discussion and
work-shom. The miterial as frr -s possible is based on

published and produced five pleys this summer. The dramutic

their discussions in union problems, economics und work-shop
classes.
