re: 2 Internetional Criminal Police
Commission,
The entire file in connection with this organization is
attached hereto.
-It will be observed from the tickler copy of your menorandum
from the Director to the Attorney General, under date of May 13,
1955, that on that’day the Director suggested either Mr. Bruce Smith
or Mr. Leonard Harrison, both of New York City, as gentlemen who
mipht be considered qualified to represent the Department of Justice
at the eleventh annual meeting of the Commission to be held at Copen-
wae
hagen, Denmark, from June 17 to 20, 1935.
The history, purposes and functions of this organization,
according to a statement enclosed with a letter from the Depariment of
State, addressed to the Attorney General under date of March 26, 1955,
shows: ~ 7" ~ .
~The International Criminal Police Commission was founded on
the occasion of the International Police Congress which convened at
Vienna in 1923, and has for its object the furnishing of a. practical
basis for the organization of international cooperation of police
outhorities with a view to suppress international crime and to curd
the activities of international criminals. The Commission is described
as a perinanent working committee composed of representatives of the
’ States (countries) interested in the work of the Commission,
The following countries are represented on the Cormission by
official delegates: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Chile, the Czecho-
ylovak Republic, the Free City of Dantzig, Denmark, Finland, France,
Germany, Great Britain, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, tha
Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Rumania, Spain, Sweden, reer,
land, Turkey, and Yugoslavia. . a 4
