At this time I called Lr. Tolson in New York City and
talked with him regarding the following matters.
ir. Tolson informed me that he had instructed Ir. Doug-
las last Saturday afternoon to cancel the*fraining school for the
‘gents in Charge, but that in spite of this instruction br. Whitley
had received a letter this morning directing him to report in Yash-
ington on Januory 27th. kr. Tolson stated that he had advised Mr.
Dougias of the Director's approval of the cancellation and had
therefore told hr. Douglas to ignore any letter to the contrary

this morning and thet I had allowed him to dictate a memorandum
indicating the various materials needed for his new book. ir.
Looney stated that he probably wouldn't need the material for a
month and that he was leaving for New York in order to enter the
tombs tomorrow or the next day. He also said he had received an
advance royalty on his book in order to get unhampered publicity. ,
I. informed }r. Tolson that hr. looney had prepared two stories.
Cne is entitled "ThemBack Door,” and is claimed by hr. Mooney to
be the most vicious attack on thefarole system that he has ever
written. This story will preceed the book in the form of a movie.
The other story is entitled“ ullets or Ballets,” and will star
TaeHobinson. I advised lir. Tolson that ir. Mooney had stated
that it was agreed with Hearst that Mooney should come hack here iX
