The Director ws informed of the occurrence and writer moved to the
window in an effort to read the remaining material that was to be
called to the Director's attention. George Gutteridge then came into
the office and lit aatches while writer read the letters to the Dir.
The Director then gave writer some instructions which he wes unable

and of course depended on the recording, machine for verification.
It was not discorered until later that "the recording machine kad
ceased to function as soon as the power had been throw off.
Mr. Quinn was immediately notified afer writer had called
the guard room and talked with the engineer who explained that the
power was to be thrown off—from 10 to 1 o'clock so that certain
work could be done. Both the engineer and the guard insisted that
they had had no knowledge previously that the power was to be throw
off but that they had merely been informed that certain work was to
be done and the guard was to admit at 10 o'clock the electricians .
who were to do the work. Mr. Peck, the engineer called at the office
after the power had been restored and explained as indicated above.
He also talked over the telephone with Mr. Quinn. Ir. Hodson the
acting Sergeant of the Guard also came to the office and protested
that ke had had no mowledge that the power was to be turned off.
The home telephone number of Mr. Cavanaugh was also se-
cured and Mr. Quinn was placed in communication with Ir.
